"INDONESIANS MANAGE GOLD MEDAL RALLY", NEW YORK TIMES

Down a game and twice on the brink of defeat, the world's top team, Rexy Mainaky and Ricky Subagja of Indonesia, changed strategy, went for more smashes and rallied to beat Malaysia's Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock, 5 - 15, 15 - 13, 15 - 12, to win the men's doubles title.

Ge Fei and Gu Jun of China captured the women's gold, beating South Korea's Gil Young-ah and Jang Hye-ock, 15 - 5, 15 - 5. The younger Chinese team took the title from the world's premier pair from South Korea, who won the world championship in 1995.

In the men's gold medal match, Subagja and Mainaky, who have been together since 1990, dropped their first game of the tournament and trailed by 12 - 11 in the second. Digging out shots from the floor and flicking the shuttlecock back over the net with snaps of the wrist, the Indonesians gained the serve and went on a 4 - 1 run to even the match at one game each.
